Dialogue 1
Garth ： There’s been another airplane crash.
แปลว่า : มีเครื่องบินตกอีกลำแล้วสินะ

Jessie ： Where? Were many people killed?
แปลว่า : ที่ไหนหรอ คนตายเยอะไหม

Garth ：In Java. I just heard it on the news. They don’t know yet if there are any survivors.
แปลว่า : ในชวา ผมพึ่งได้ฟังข่าว เขายังไม่รู้เลยว่ามีคนรอดตายหรือเปล่า

Jessie ： Was it a jetliner?
แปลว่า : เป็นเครื่องบินเจ็ทหรือเปล่า

Garth ：Yes, with 200-something people on board. I didn’t catch the name of the airline.
แปลว่า : ใช่ ที่มีผู้โดยสารประมาณ 200 กว่าคน ผมฟังขื่อสายการบินไม่ทันนะครับ

ใน Present Perfect Tense จะใช้ There has beenนำหน้านามนับได้เอกพจน์และนามนับไม่ได้ และใช้ There have been นำหน้านามนับได้พหูพจน์

George : I haven’t seen a paper in days Anything happening in the world?
แปลว่า : ผมไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือพิมพ์มาหลายวันแล้ว มีข่าวอะไรบ้างไหมครับ

Marie : Let’s see a major gangster was indicted another princess is getting divorced and there was a little earthquake in San Francisco.
แปลว่า : จะดูให้นะ พวกโจรแก๊งใหญ่ถูกฟ้อง เจ้าหญิงพระองค์หนึ่งกำลังหย่าร้าง และมีแผ่นดินไหวเล็กน้อยในซานฟรานซิสโก

George : Oh, I’d like to read about the earthquake.
แปลว่า : โอ้ ผมอยากจะอ่านข้าวเกี่ยวกับแผ่นดินไหว

Marie : You’ll have to wait until I finish with this section.
แปลว่า : คุณจะต้องคอยจนกว่าฉันจะอ่านจบตอนนี้เสียก่อนน้ะจ๊ะ

George: All right, but can I see the sports pages in the meantime?

1.I’d like to…… มาจาก I would like to… หมายถึง ฉันอยาก …. would like to ต้องตามด้วยกริยาช่องที่ 1

ตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ เช่น
l’d like to read about the earthquake. แปลว่า : ผมอยากอ่านข่าวเกี่ยวกับแผ่นดินไหว
She’d like to go there with us.
แปลว่า : หล่อนอยากไปที่นั้นกับเรา

2 have to, has to, have got to, has got to (= must)
แปลว่า : ต้อง หรือ จำเป็นต้อง ใช้แสดงหน้าที่หรือภาระกิจที่จะต้องทำ หลัง have to หรือ has to ต้องตามด้วยกริยาช่องที่ 1 เสมอ

We have to go home now.
แปลว่า : พวกเราจะต้องกลับบ้านเดี๋ยวนี้
Jim has to work from Monday to Friday

แปลว่า : จิมต้องทำงานตั้งแต่วันจันทร์จนถึงวันศุกร์

Joanne : Want me to turn on the news?
แปลว่า : จะให้ฉันเปิดข่าวให้ฟังไหม

Bob : Don’t bother. I heard it on the way over.
แปลว่า : ไม่ต้องห่วงหรอก ผมฟังข่าวในรถระหว่างทางแล้ว

Joanne : It must have been depressing.
แปลว่า : คงเป็นข่าวที่ไม่ค่อยดีนักหรอก

Bob : I’m afraid so. The stock market is still falling and Congress passed another tax bill.
แปลว่า : ผิดก็คิดอย่างนั้นนะ ตลาดหุ้นก็ยังคงตกอยู่ และสภาก็ออกกฏหมายเก็บภาษีอีกฉบับหนึ่งแล้ว

Joanne : What about the weather forecast?
แปลว่า : แล้วพยากรณ์อากาศวันนี้ล่ะ

Bob : The temperature is dropping fast now. There’s a likelihood of snow tonight.
แปลว่า : ตอนนี้อุณหภูมิลดต่ำลงเร็วมากๆ และดูเหมือนว่าจะมีหิมะตกคืนนี้ด้วยนะ

Joanne : In that case, I’ve got to remember to put my car in the garage.
แปลว่า : ถ้าอย่างนั้น ฉันก็ต้องไม่ลืมที่จะจอดรถไว้ในโรงรถแน่นอน

แปลว่า : จ๊ะ สบู่ 1 ก้อนนะ

2. Present Perfect Continuous Tense ของกิรยาช่วย must คือ must have+ been + verb.ing แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตต่าเนื่องมาถึงปัจจุบัน ในขณะที่พูดและคาดว่าจะดำเนินต่อไปในอนาคต

I must have been working day and night.
แปลว่า : ฉันทำงานมาแล้วทั้งวันทั้งคืน

We must have been continuing this project.
แปลว่า : พวกเราคงจะดำเดินโครงการนี้ต่อไป

Roger : Did you hear about the man who took a half dozen people hostage?
แปลว่า : คุณได้ยินข่าวที่มีชายคนหนึ่งจับคนเป็นตัวประกันไว้ 6 คนหรือเปล่า

Patty : I overheard some people discussing it What happened?

Roger : Some crazy guy went into a 7-11 over on the west side. He took these people hostage and threatened to shoot them unless the police came up with a million dollars.

unless (ถ้า…ไม่ ) มีความหมายเท่ากับ if….not เป็นคำเชื่อม สามารถวางไว้กลางประโยคหรือต้นประโยคก็ได้

2. I suppose ….ฉันคาดว่า … สำนวนพูดแสดงสิ่งที่คาดเดา
